[surveyor-notify] ALCF Weekly Updates - September 15

ALCF User Services support at alcf.anl.gov
Thu Sep 15 16:59:08 CDT 2011

*** Maintenance Monday: September 19 ***
Routine maintenance kicks off at 9 a.m. CDT (14:00 UTC) on Monday, September 19, for Intrepid, Eureka, Surveyor and Gazooks. The systems will be unavailable during maintenance. Please watch the "notify" lists for projected and actual release times.

*** Intrepid Users: Note Ongoing Intrepid Filesystem Changes ***
We have almost finished filesystem reorganizations and creating new /intrepid-fs0 project directories on Intrepid. Soon, we will be asking you to move your data into the new directories. Please continue to watch for more information and details. If you have questions, contact your Catalyst or support at alcf.anl.gov.

*** Register Now for "Getting Started" at the ALCF: October 4 & 5 ***
The Getting Started workshop at the ALCF provides new users with key information on services and resources, technical details of the Blue Gene/P, as well as hands-on assistance in porting and tuning applications. ALCF computational scientists and performance engineers will provide presentations and guided hands-on exercises. Topics covered will include Blue Gene/P architecture, ALCF infrastructure, debugging on the Blue Gene, and visualization systems and services. To register or for additional information, go to: http://workshops.alcf.anl.gov/gs11fall/.

*** Showcase Your Visualization Movies in the Argonne Booth at SC11 ***
The technical computing community's premier conference, SC11, will be held in Seattle, November 12-18 (see "Important Dates" below). If you are interested in having your project's visualization movies featured, please contact Chel Heinzel for submission details at chel at alcf.anl.gov. Visualization submissions are due October 7.

*** Choose Parallel "Make" and "Compile" Options with Care ***
Before using parallel make and similar tools on ALCF login systems, please be cognizant of available resources. Blue Gene/P login nodes have 4 PowerPC 970 cores with 4 GB of memory. Running more than four simultaneous compile threads negatively impacts system performance, including filesystems, and prevents reasonable usage of the system by others.

*** Avoid Application Crashes ***
When developing OpenMP-threaded code, your application may crash unexpectedly if it exceeds the default thread-stack allocation. For details and the simple solution, visit: https://wiki.alcf.anl.gov/index.php/Running#Thread_stack_size
