*** Special Maintenance Friday, September 23, for Intrepid and Eureka ***
On Friday, September 23, Intrepid and Eureka will be offline for a special maintenance period, starting at 14:00 UTC, and ending at approximately 22:00 UTC. During this time, no jobs will run on the system, scheduler commands (such as qsub and qstat) will be unavailable, and there may be disruptions in filesystem access and in network access to the login nodes. Please watch the "notify" lists for notice that the machines are again available for general use. Please send any comments or questions to support at alcf.anl.gov.

*** Intrepid Users: Move Your Data to New Directory ***
As part of the file-system restructuring plan, new directories have been created for each project under /intrepid-fs0. By December 1, 2011, please MOVE the data from your /intrepid-fs0/users directory to your new project directory. Please MOVE (do NOT copy) the data, as copying it will result in space shortages in the file system.

The new project directories are located directly under /intrepid-fs0: /intrepid-fs0/<project-short-name>. If you don't know your project's short name, type "projects" at the prompt. The directory name will have exactly the same capitalization and punctuation as is displayed in the output. There is also a unix group with the same name. All active project members have been added to that group and the group has full permissions. The directory structure below the top-level project directory is at the discretion of the project members. Please work with your project members to determine the remaining structure to avoid data over-writing or duplicate data moves. If you have any problems or questions, please contact support at alcf.anl.gov.

*** Switch to Challenger Means Procedural Changes for Users ***
Challenger (the ALCF's new rack of Blue Gene/P) will be online soon. Once Challenger is online, the prod-devel queue on Intrepid will be retired and jobs formerly run there will be run on Challenger. To help smooth the transition to Challenger, please continue to watch for additional information and training opportunities.

*** Register Now for "Getting Started" at the ALCF: October 4 & 5 ***
The Getting Started workshop at the ALCF provides new users with key information on services and resources, technical details of the Blue Gene/P, as well as hands-on assistance in porting and tuning applications. ALCF computational scientists and performance engineers will provide presentations and guided hands-on exercises. Topics will include Blue Gene/P architecture, ALCF infrastructure, debugging on the Blue Gene, and visualization systems and services. To register or for additional information, go to: http://workshops.alcf.anl.gov/gs11fall/.

*** Showcase Your Visualization Movies in the Argonne Booth at SC11 ***
The technical computing community's premier conference, SC11, will be held in Seattle, November 12-18. If you are interested in having your project's visualization movies featured, please contact Chel Heinzel for submission details at chel at alcf.anl.gov. Visualization submissions are due October 7. If you're in Seattle for SC, please stop by and see us at the Argonne booth.

*** Quantum Chemistry Featured in 9/29 ALCF User Call ***
This month's ALCF User Call will feature a technical discussion, "Aspects of Quantum Chemistry," given by Graham Fletcher, principle project specialist in computational science. All users are invited and encouraged to call in. For details, see: http://www.alcf.anl.gov/news/eventsdetail.php?id=1361
