Can you please clarify manual seperation ?
DCMF = comm/sys/*
MPI and higher layers = comm/lib/*
By seperating out do you mean have seperate makefiles for each of them?

Will it be possible to separate out the DCMF layer, so that upper-level
libraries (such as MPI) can be developed independently and just linked
to different versions of the DCMF layer?
Currently, we manually separate out the DCMF portions of the code, and
it's difficult to do it for each revision.
